Pender Island’s Amazing Christmas Spirit

By Howard Sanders • January 5th, 2011

Over the holiday season Pender showed its true spirit when almost one hundred and eighty islanders showed up for the community pot-luck Christmas dinner.

In only its second year this special event recognises that there are some in our community who, for whatever reason, spend this special day alone, so to make up for this the idea of a community dinner was born. The only requirement  was to bring an appetiser or desert and then the rest of the meal was free. Six families who couldn’t attend the event even had plated food taken to their homes.

It was heart-warming to see not only the older residents of the island show up, but also young families who welcomed these singles onto their tables with laughter and good cheer. The turkey and stuffing was wonderful, there were vegetarian options and an overwhelming choice of deserts to tempt the palate. In these times of austerity it was comforting to know that Pender looks after its own and it reminded many of us, myself and my wife included, as to why we choose to call this special island home in the first place.

Heartfelt thanks go out to the many volunteers who made it possible with particular mention to Nicole Payer, Catherine Potin, Chris Poellin and Rita Di Gange for the organisation and cooking of such a spectacular meal.

Great job guys!
